POS Businesses Restricted Within 200 Metres of Police Stations — IGP

The Inspector General of the Nigeria Police Force has reportedly directed that Point of Sale (POS) operators must no longer operate within 200 metres of police stations across the country.
According to reports, the decision follows growing concerns and allegations of extortion activities allegedly linked to some POS operators around police facilities.
Authorities believe the move will help reduce suspicious financial transactions, unauthorized charges, and other activities perceived to compromise the integrity of law enforcement environments.
The directive is expected to affect numerous POS businesses situated close to police stations nationwide, especially in busy urban areas where such services are commonly used by residents and officers alike.
The development has already sparked reactions among Nigerians, with some supporting the decision as a step toward curbing extortion and improving accountability, while others worry about the impact on small business owners who rely on daily POS transactions for income.
POS operations have become a major part of Nigeria’s informal financial system, particularly in areas with limited banking infrastructure and frequent cash shortages.
As implementation begins, many stakeholders are calling for clearer guidelines and fair enforcement to avoid unnecessary disruption for legitimate business operators.
